I have to admit, this post comes earlier than planned. I am still reading “VMware vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive” by Frank Denneman and Niels Hagoort. See above, third part of the book (“Storage Resources”), chapter 14 (“Non-volatile Memory Architecture”), page 331. Printed version, no search function available yet.
Why do I write this now? Because Rubrik and VMUG have an early Christmas gift for us. After Rubrik gave away at VMworld 2000 free copies of the printed version of “VMware vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive”, they partnered with VMUG and decided to further support the community by providing a free PDF version of the book. So, what’s in it for you?
First and foremost, I loved the Foreword and the Prologues at the beginning of each chapter. These are excellent writings by Kit Colbert (VP & CTO of the Cloud Platform Business Unit at VMware, former technical lead of vMotion and Storage vMotions), the one and only Pat Gelsinger (CEO of VMware, but also the first CTO in the history of Intel and architect of 80486 processor), Carl Waldspurger (former architect of DRS at VMware), Christos Karamanolis (Fellow and the CTO of the Storage and Availability Business Unit at VMware), and Andrew Lambeth (leader of Virtual Distributed Switch at VMware). This list alone impressed me, each person from it had its contribution to the virtualization industry as we know it today.
This is not a book for beginners, this is not a book that will teach you how to use vSphere. This is not an easy weekend read. For certain parts, you will have to read a page again and again until you will understand it. I feel like the “deep dive” construct is somehow abused these days, but not in this case. This is a deep dive. Frank and Niels are going so deep into low-level details of the main four components: CPU, memory, storage, and networking. I never seen this level of details in a commercial book.
